Ask MECO: How
can I save energy this year?
Reduce your electric "waste line" in
2007 with the following:
Kilowatt-free hot water!
Solar water heating can reduce kilowatt consumption by about
$50 for a typical family of four. MECO provides a $1000 rebate for the
installation of a solar water heating system. And you may qualify
for addtional tax credits. Call 1-888-MECO SUN for a list of
participating solar contractors.
Think Lite!
Switch to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), and lose up to
75% of the energy used by standard incandescent bulbs. Today's CFLs cost much
less than just a few years ago. They are available at most hardware
stores, fit almost anywhere, and come in a variety of decorative shapes and
sizes.
Avoid fattening kilowatts!
Instead of air conditioners, choose all natural Hawaiian
trade winds or Energy Star ceiling fans. If your ceiling fan uses lights, be
sure that the light kit is also Energy Star rated. Roof mounted
solar fans keep attic heat from
radiating into the living space below, without using any
electricity. Radiant barrier can be installed in the attic as a weekend project
to reflect heat away. Consult with your tax professional regarding tax credits
for fans and radiant barrier.
Exercise!
Take regular, brisk walks from the clothes washer to the
yard, and lift a load of laundry to the clothesline for 10 minutes several
times a week to help develop a slimmer electric bill.
Exercise your right to choose Energy Star appliances, enable
"sleep" features on your computer, disconnect "wall cubes"
for charging devices, and use power strips with surge protection for easy shut
down of "phantom loads."
