At 31, Doctor David Servan-Schreiber learned he had a cancerous brain tumor, and
he has lived with it and fought it for sixteen years. He suggests five ways to make your
body a cancer-unfriendly zone. First give up refined sugar and products which quickly turn into sugar, such as white flour. Sugar fuels cancer growth and triggers inflammation.
Physical activity improves survival rates. Schedule at least thirty minutes of exercise
six days a week. Stress causes inflammation and weakens your immune system. Learn to react to stress in a healthy way with yoga or mindful meditation. Avoid household toxins as much as possible. Some of these toxins are preservatives in cosmetics parabens and phthalates), Teflon released from scratched pans; dry cleaning chemicals, and bisphenol from heating some plastics.
Add cancer fighting foods to your meals. Dr. Servan-Schreiber calls the following “Fierce Foods”:
• Herbs and spices: thyme, rosemary, mint, basil, sage, ginger, and turmeric
• Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, sardines, mackerel, walnuts, and green vegetables
• Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage
• Garlic, onions, leeks
• Blackberries, blue berries, strawberries, raspberries
• Beverages: green tea, pomegranate juice, red wine in moderation.
