Keiki who enjoy animals are in for a real “doggy treat.” The Maui Humane Society (MHS) has recently launched several new youth programs to capture the interest of youth looking for something to do this summer… and beyond. Preschool Story Time, Youth Clubs, A Youth Website, and Animal Camp are just a few things that the MHS Development Department has introduced.

The programs begin with a bang this summer as MHS hosts Animal Camp all summer long. One-week day camps provide a chance for students to play with the animals, learn about animal careers and welfare, as well as take part in games and activities. For grades K through two, Lil’ Bow Wow and Meow Camp teaches children pet responsibility through fun and games, grades three through five can enjoy learning about the wonderful world of animals, while grades six through eight are pet detectives, learning about animals while solving a case.

“It’s the best camp I attend all year,” said Emma, a regular attendee at Animal Camp. “I can’t wait for it to begin again!” Camp begins soon: Find registration forms, dates and times at www.mauihumanesociety.org.

Every Thursday at 1:30 p.m., keiki up to age five can take pleasure in Preschool Story Time.  Songs, stories, activities and of course, animals are nearby to captivate and enliven your little one.  It’s a half-hour of fun as guest readers from staff at MHS bring their own brand of entertainment each and every week, with a few surprises along the way.

Junior Animal Lovers Club launched in early May and is designed to encourage service learning, community volunteerism and animal welfare among students’ grades five through eight. A fun, comprehensive club that meets once a month, Junior Animal Lovers Club focuses on group projects, animal advocacy, and community service opportunities, to be a voice for the animals on the island of Maui. Students interested in joining can write to the Education Coordinator at peted@mauihumanesociety.org  for a free Club Membership Kit.

Wanting to give kids a chance to dig in and become part of the ‘ohana at MHS, A Youth Website (www.mauihumanesociety.org) was designed and launched to provide a “go-to” for all things youth and animals. It provides information on all programs and events, as well as the fun, interactive “WoogiWorld” where kids can take responsibility for their own virtual pet, while meeting other kid animal lovers around the world. For teens, it provides information on the upcoming Teen Scene Club that will be launched this fall, as well as links to the Humane Teen Website providing information on animal welfare.

Throughout the year, more programs and events will be introduced, including Saturday Animal School in the fall. MHS hosts tours of the facility for students, as well as providing in-classroom presentations that meet Hawai‘i’s Teaching Standards for all grade levels.
